Guided by the whakataukī ‘Kua takoto te mānuka’ – "The challenge has been set" – this HONO one-of-a-kind upcycle jacket, takes up the call to confront today’s challenges for our people, with innovation and honour.
Whakahōnore represents the responsibility and commitment by our government to uphold the unique values and histories that shape Aotearoa. Honouring this partnership means acknowledging the depth of Māori knowledge and tikanga while fostering an attitude of honouring our culture's contributions that make Aotearoa what it is. For generations, Māori have endured hegemony, colonisation and oppression but have and will continue to stand strong together through whakapapa. It’s a call to uphold Māori mana motuhake (self-determination) while creating space for genuine partnership, where Māori voices lead on issues of cultural significance.
Whakahōnore signifies a deep, ongoing commitment to preserving Māori heritage, ensuring it thrives in a way that enriches all who honour our mātauranga, reo and taonga. It invites the wearer (whether Māori mā or Tau Iwi) to embrace our heritage but also the responsibility we each carry to uphold and protect te ao Māori.
Each element weaves together old and new, allowing us to face the challenge of the mānuka with honour and truth.
